On 30th April I spent a wonderful morning at Martin Mere in Burscough. I’d never been before, so it was a delight to be shown round by Nick and Emma. In West Lancashire, we are spoilt with natural beauty. Martin Mere’s less than a 15-minute drive from Ormskirk, but it feels a world away with its collection of birds and great views. What a treat.

There’s always work to be done though! I had a useful conversation with Nick about Martin Mere’s role in the local community. We discussed how Martin Mere helps with local flood management, and its relationship with neighbouring landowners. I also learnt about how the Mere invites visits from local schools and community groups, to ensure that all of us in West Lancashire get an opportunity to enjoy this fantastic spot.

Emma from Wildfowl and Wetland Trust (WWT), which owns Martin Mere, gave me a good overview of the work that WWT is doing nationally with other MPs.

A great morning overall.
