Today, West Lancashire MP Ashley Dalton secured a win for the local area in its fight to deliver two new leisure centres for Skelmersdale and Ormskirk.
Ashley Dalton secured a debate in Parliament on Leisure Services in West Lancashire. She made an appeal to the Government to make the funds available to the local council to replace the Nye Bevan and Park Pool facilities in the constituency.
Responding on behalf of the Government, the Minister for Sport told Ms Dalton that she would “ensure that the specific points raised about the financial position of West Lancashire Borough Council are brought to the attention of [her] ministerial colleagues in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.”
This is ahead of the local government financial settlement next year when the Government will decide the money allocated to local councils.
Ms Dalton used the debate to highlight concerns the local community have raised about the future of the Nye Bevan swimming pool in Skelmersdale and the Park Pool in Ormskirk.
In her speech, the Labour MP referred to letters sent to her from the children on the school council at Crawford Village Primary School in Upholland and spoke about the health, social and well-being benefits that swimming provides.
Speaking on the commitment, Ashley Dalton said “I am delighted that the Government is listening to the issues that I raised today.
“Protecting swimming services in West Lancashire is incredibly important for people locally and I hope that the Government will do all it can to support the Council.”
“I’ll write to the Minister to thank her for her commitment and make the case for Government help to build new facilities for our community.”
