Residents in Scarisbrick are increasingly becoming concerned about the situation concerning the war memorial at Scarisbrick Village Hall, the running of the Hall and the steps taken by the trustees to restrict public access and remove play facilities.
I recently attended a really productive Scarisbrick Parish Council meeting with local residents on this issue. The meeting was extremely productive. There was a consensus in the room that the war memorial should be protected and an overwhelming desire to see the Hall better serving residents as a community facility.
Unfortunately, whilst having been specifically invited by the Parish Council, none of the trustees of the Scarisbrick Village Hall charitable trust attended the meeting and so were unable to address the concerns of residents.
The meeting resolved that Scarisbrick Parish Council would contact the Village Hall Trustees and offer to repair the paving elements of the war memorial, as this was the reason identified by the Village Hall for requesting the removal of the memorial and the paving, and thereby removing any need for it to be removed or relocated. The Parish Council also resolved to contact the War Memorials Trust and The British Legion to seek support and to explore legal advice on the matter of the war memorial.
However, this weekend I learned from local residents that the trustees of the Village Hall are planning to remove the war memorial even if the pavement is repaired.
I am writing to the trustees of Scarisbrick Village Hall outlining my concerns about the maintenance and the running of the Hall and to express the strength of public opinion about the hall and their plans for the war memorial. I am also asking the trustees to meet with me to discuss these issues and their plans.
To demonstrate the strength of public opinion in support of protecting the war memorial, I am launching a petition. If you want to add your name in support of protecting the memorial, please sign below.
We the undersigned call on the trustees of Scarisbrick Village Hall to halt any plans to remove the war memorial located at the Hall.
The memorial honours those from the community who served to protect all our freedoms and made the ultimate sacrifice. Its removal is unnecessary and distressing.
We urge the trustees to respect the wishes of the community, engage openly with local residents and the Parish Council, and work to ensure that the Hall and its grounds serve the people of Scarisbrick as a welcoming, accessible, and community-focused space.
